Spotted Salamander
(
Ambystoma maculatum)
Spotted Salamanders are generally blackish with two rows of yellow spots running from the top of the
head, down the back and on the tail.  They are relatively large as adults, usually between 5-7 inches but
occasionly approaching 8 or even 9 inches long.  They are very localized in Essex County and since the
only known woodlands that hold this species (within this county) are on private property they are rarely
seen or reported.  Spotted Salamanders are unlikely to be confused with any other species since they are
the only ones with bright yellow dorsal spots.  If you find this species in Essex County please
contact me so
that a record can be submitted and we can better understand this rather elusive species status in Essex
County.
Found in Jackson County, Illinois, USA
