Midland Chorus Frog
(
Pseudacris triseriata triseriata)
This is always one of the first frogs to be heard calling and one of the first signs that Spring is here but
despite being very common and widespread throughout the County this frog is surprisingly difficult to find.
I've had success at photographing them by approaching a pond that they are calling in and waiting until
they are used to my presence (or more likely until they forget I was there) and focus on where the calls are
coming from.  This frog can be heard in just about any small body of water in the County in April and May
and it appears to be in a healthy and stable state.  They are identifiable by their small size and their beige
to brown ground colour, the dark stripe running from the snout through the eye and past the ear and the
darker blotches on the back.  They tend to get much lighter in colour if handled.
