Gray Treefrog
(
Hyla versicolor)
This species is considered by many to be extirpated in Essex County but on May 17, 2006 Tom Preney
and myself clearly heard one calling just north of Point Pelee National Park.  A report of this exciting find
was submitted to the Ontario Herpetofaunal Summary Atlas.  No photos were taken of the frog since it
wasn't seen.  It was about 20 feet or so up an oak tree directly above a pond that was teeming with calling
American Toads, Spring Peepers and Green Frogs.  After several subsequent visits by myself and Dan
Wylie I was unable to find an individual (or even hear another one) but I hope to photograph one next year
when the males start calling again.
