| Bull Frog (Rana catesbeiana ) |
|||||||
| A common and widespread species throughout the county. These frogs can grow to very large sizes and will eat anything they can swallow. I was fishing at a marina in LaSalle when I was younger and I witnessed a large bull frog attack a sparrow that had gotten within a few inches, the sparrow escaped but it would have easily been eaten by the frog if it hadn't gotten away. Bull frogs require permanent, deep water because the tadpoles take at least 2 years to develop and must avoid freezing in the winter. A really good place to see bull frogs is at Holiday Beach in Amherstburg, the trout pond provides the perfect habitat and it is not unusual to see twenty or more if you walk around the pond. The photos below were taken at Holiday Beach. |
