Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi)
|
The brown snake lives a somewhat secretive life amongst the grass and leaf litter and as a result it usually
goes unnoticed. It is impossible to estimate the population of this species but I wouldn't be at all surprised
if this was the counties most numerous snake. They vary in colour a great deal and may be any shade of
orange, pink, grey or brown. As with most snakes, it will usually secrete a foul smelling substance from its
cloaca if handled but bites are rare (I have never heard of anyone being bitten by this species) and they
are completely harmless. They eat mainly slugs and worms.
